Question by Anne V: If a toddler makes an animal sound does this count as the toddler saying a word?
I have a 17 month old son who says a couple of words. In addition, he says a bunch of animal sounds. However, he will not say the name of the animal. For example, he will say “moo” but not “cow.” He will bark but will not say “dog.” He also will say “vroom” but will not say “truck.” Do these sounds count as words? I’m not trying to score the number of words he says. I’m just curious.

I guess you could count them as words, but they are more like Onomatopoeia…
